ATHLETICS Ruth Usoro set to compete at Don Kirby Elite Indoor Meet on Friday

Ruth Usoro will aim to extend her world-leading long jump mark, when she competes on Friday.

World leader in the women's long jump, Ruth Usoro, is scheduled to compete at the Don Kirby Elite Indoor Invitational on Friday, 10.

Usoro is listed as unattached and will line up in the women's long jump event, where she'll be the favourite for victory.

She last competed at the Texas Tech Corky Classic two weeks ago, soaring to a Personal Best (PB) and world-leading distance of 6.87m.

Her mark surpassed the World Championships automatic qualifying standard of 6.85m, launching her to joint No. 2 alongside Blessing Okagbare on the all-time African indoor list, behind Chioma Ajunwa's African Record (AR) of 6.97m.

Usoro is now the second Nigerian jumper to have qualified for the prestigious championship after Ese Brume did so at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The 25-year-old will be gunning for a better performance when she competes this weekend, thereby extending her current lead on the world's top list for 2023.

Other Nigerian NCAA athletes listed to compete at the meet

Amarachukwu Obi will don the colours of her school, the University Of Alabama, in the women's 200m.

Texas Tech University junior, Best Erhire, will hope to scale a new PB in the men's high jump after making his season's debut two weeks ago, equalling his PB of 2.23m.

University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) junior, Karo Brume, is to take part in the women's 400m.

Also, Anita Taviore is expected to line up in the women's 200m for Boise State University.
