How Faith Kipyegon won

Kipyegon, the World 1500m Record holder as the Women's Track Athlete of the Year, makes her the first female athlete from her country to win the prestigious award.

Kipyegon won ahead of Jamaica's world 200m champion, Shericka Jackson, and Netherland's 400m Hurdles world champion, Femke Bol.

The double world and Olympic champion's outstanding 2023 season was highlighted by breaking Genzebe Dibaba’s World Record (WR) with a sensational time of 3:49.11, becoming the first woman to break the 3:50 barrier.

This record set the pace for a clutch of WRs she will later run in the 5000m and one mile, making her one of the most outstanding athletes of the 2023 season.

How Noah Lyles won

Meanwhile, triple world champion Lyles was the overwhelming favourite for the Male Track Athlete of the Year.

Noah Lyles became the world fastest man after winning the 100m world title in Budapest

The American speedster cemented his place as one of the top sprinters in history. On track, he maintained his position as world 200m leader for the sixth consecutive year and was undefeated in six 200m finals. Further proving his versatility, he closed the season as the joint world leader in the 100m.

Off-track, the 26-year-old placed athletics in the spotlight, and made it the center of attention. He became the most talked about and controversial male athlete. Also, he's increasingly peerless at knowing how to be famous away from the track and transcending the sport.
