59 athletes selected for Africa Senior Athletics Championships

Athletics Kenya has unveiled the team selected to represent the country at the 23rd edition of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships scheduled for later this month.

Mark Otieno and Esther Mbagari headline a strong field to the 23rd edition of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships scheduled for June 21 to 26 in Douala, Cameroon.

Athletics Kenya announced on Tuesday night, June 11, that they have selected a formidable team of 26 female and 33 male athletes to compete in the continental showpiece.

Otieno will be competing in the men’s 100m and will enjoy the company of Meshack Babu as they look to retain the African title that was won by Ferdinand Omanyala whilst looking to make the cut to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Mbagari will double in the 100m and 200m events and will enjoy the company of Monica Safania in the 100m and Eunice Kadogo in the 200m. Mike Mokamba and Samuel Chege have been selected for the men’s 200m.

The women’s 800m will see Mary Moraa’s cousin Sarah Moraa join Lilian Odira in the campaign with Kipng’etich Ngeno enjoying the company of Nicholas Kiplagat in the men’s event. The men’s 5000m will have Stanley Waithaka and Levy Kibet while the women’s event will see Mercy Chepkemoi and Teresiah Muthoni take on the strong fields in Cameroon.

Gladys Kwamboka and Roncer Kipkorir headline the men’s 10,000m races with Amos Serem’s younger brother Edmund Serem, making his senior national team second appearance in the steeplechase after his exploits in Ghana.

The women’s event will be headlined by Mercy Wanjiru. The women’s 1500m will see Mary Ekiru headline the field and she will enjoy the company of Caroline Nyaga with the men’s race including Brian Komen and Kiprugut Boaz.

The 20km race walk will see Margaret Gati represent the women while Heristone Wanyonyi will don the Kenyan jersey in the men’s field. The field events have also been fully represented with Kenya sending strong teams for the events.

The team will be led by Mr. Stephen Mugea Etyang, chairman AK NPS and head coach Mr. Julius Kirwa and will report to a residential training camp on Thursday, June 13.

The event will be very crucial for Team Kenya who will also be looking to qualify for the Olympic Games, just being a few days before the deadline.
