Abel Kipchumba has opened up about his dreadful experience in his first New York visit where he lost his bags at the airport but ended up winning the New York City Half Marathon.

Abel Kipchumba has opened up about the nightmare ordeal he encountered at the airport before descending on the course at the New York City Half Marathon on Sunday, March 17.

The 2023 Boston Half Marathon champion explained that he lost a bag at the airport and had to wait for six hours for his issue to be sorted. However, the challenge did not affect him since his main focus was on competing in the race and winning.

Growing up, the 30-year-old also noted that he always dreamt of competing in the streets of New York City either in the half marathon or full marathon and was happy to have actualised that.

“My bags in the airport got lost and I stayed there for six hours but my mind was not focusing on the bags, I just wanted to do well in the race.

“It was my first time in New York City and I am very happy to have won the race. I always dreamt of running here either in the marathon or half marathon and I’m glad to have fulfilled my dreams,” he said.

However, the 2021 Valencia Half Marathon champion disclosed that it was not an easy run for him and he had his work cut out in the race that had attracted marathon king Kenenisa Bekele.

Kipchumba explained that the course was not easy since there were a lot of hills and the weather was also a major undoing.

He managed to cut the tape first in 1:00:25 ahead of Zouhair Talbi who finished second in 1:00:41, followed by Yemane Haileselassie of Eritrea in third.

“Today was my day and I won the race…but it was a tough one because of the course. I put my mind to it despite the course being a tough one.

“I came here with my friend who was position two and we were running together until about 3km to go when I decided to go for the win. He was putting up a good fight and coming closer and it was not easy because of the wind and the hills,” he said.
