The AFN has selected a new date for the National Cross Country Race in Jalingo.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that the National Cross Country Race will now take place on March 18, 2023, in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.

This was made known by the AFN Vice-president Tafida Gadzama, who is also head of the Road Race sub-committee.

"The AFN National Cross Country race will hold on Saturday, March 18 in Jalingo and the AFN is making arrangements for a hitch-free event," said Gadzama.

"If they are competitive and achieve the standards that will get them to run the in continental and international road races, they can start making money that will use to take care of their families and contribute to the GDP of Nigeria," he added on the importance of the cross country race.

Blessing Solomon won the first National Cross Country Championships in Jos

Gadzama also explained that the road races will make Nigerian long-distance runners better and stronger athletes.

"According to experts, running cross-country does not only build athletes' physical strength but also their mental strength. Anyone who has ever run cross-country understands the mental toughness that is necessary to complete a workout and a race," he concluded.

The first National 10km Cross Country race in nearly forty years was held in Jos last month, with Kefar Williams and Blessing Solomon emerging victorious.
