Favour Ofili set about five different records with her new 200m indoor African Record time.
'Star Girl' Favour Ofili has done it again. This time, the Louisiana State University (LSU) junior shattered her indoor Personal Best (PB) and 200m African Record (AR) of 22.46s, with a new 22.36s to win the event at the Tiger Paw Invitational.
The time is a new Nigerian Record (NR), world lead, NCAA lead, LSU record, Facility Record, the second fastest time in NCAA history, and the sixth fastest in world history.
Ofili kicked off her 2023 indoor season two weeks ago, running a then-collegiate lead of 22.52s. Last week, she clocked 22.59s, which was still in the top five fastest times in the world this year.
On Friday at the Tiger Paw Invitational, she clocked a brilliant PB of 7.15s to finish second in the 60m final, which was a significant indication that her 200m AR was going down sooner than later.
Ofili now owns the top seven fastest times by an African indoor 200m female runner in history, with her progression reading thus - 22.75s, 22.71s, 22.61s, 22.59s, 22.52s, 22.46s, and 22.36s.
Noteworthy is that after running 22.46s indoors last year, Ofili went on to clock a PB and NR of 21.96s outdoors, becoming the first Nigerian and collegiate runner to go under the sub-22s mark outdoors.
She also ran 22.0s twice, won 200m silver medals at the NCAA Championships and Commonwealth Games, and ended the season with a 22.5s outdoors; after running over sixty races during the 2022 season.
With the exclusion of her college rival Abby Steiner, who turned professional at the end of last season, Ofili is on course to sweep all college titles in the 200m, indoors and outdoors this 2023 season.
