London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso has made a bold claim about the chances of Kenya’s marathon team at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso believes Kenya will have a medal sweep in the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Mutiso made the final team alongside Tokyo Marathon winner Benson Kipruto and defending champion Eliud Kipchoge, with Timothy Kiplagat listed as a reserve.
With the experience and quality on the team, Mutiso is backing all three of them to bag medals in Tokyo even with the expected competition, especially from Ethiopia, who have veteran Kenenisa Bekele, whom he beat in London in April, and Sisay Lemma, who destroyed the field to win the Boston Marathon, the same month.

Why Eliud Kipchoge trains on a gravel track in Eldoret once a week as he gears up for Paris Olympics
Experts have explained why Eliud Kipchoge and his teammates regulary train on a gravel track once a week as preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics hit top gear.
“They chose the strongest team and Kenyans should expect medals from the three of us because they selected the top runners who are all very good,” said Mutiso.
It will be the first Olympics outing for both Mutiso and Kipruto who are looking for their maiden medals in Kenyan national team colours and will have the experience of veteran Kipchoge to count on.
The 27-year-old has had a good year, winning the Prague Marathon before a second-place finish in Valencia in December, which laid the path for his victory in London in April.

The many Olympic firsts that await Kenya’s marathon team in Paris
Kenya unveiled a formidable Olympic marathon team that comprise defending champions Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir but all six runners are eyeing their own ‘first’ in Paris.
Mutiso had not been part of Kenya’s provisional squad released last December but the death of world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, added to his good form worked in his favour.
Kipchoge, meanwhile, had poor run in Tokyo, when he finished 10th, but his experience and status won the selectors over as he looks to become the first man to bag three straight Olympics gold in marathon after his wins in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
For Kipruto, his win in Tokyo in March was his fourth victory in his last seven marathons, having also won in Prague and Boston in 2021 and Chicago in 2022.

Peres Jepchirchir reveals what worries her ahead of Olympic title defence
Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has explained why she is concerned as she prepares to defend her title at the Paris Games.
During that period, the 32-year-old has also not finished outside the top three, third in Boston in 2022 and 2023, as well as a second place in Chicago last year.
That makes for a formidable Team Kenya that should be hard to beat in Paris but teamwork will also be crucial if they have to keep their rivals away from spoiling the party.
