Schmidt on wages in athletics
The 24-year-old, who was part of the German contingent to the Olympics three years ago, was a member of the 4x400m squad.
However, despite reaching the very top in her chosen career, Alicia is not happy with her take-home in the sport.
Per a report from Daily Mail, Schmidt revealed that she only makes around 700 euros and has had to depend on her massive social media presence to live.
“In principle, I have to say that it is not easy for most German track and field athletes to make a living from sport,’' she said.
'’If we are in the squad, i.e. in the national team, we receive €700 (£611) from Sporthilfe.'’
On living off social media
While many athletes dream of hitting the very top of their field, the German added that it comes with small financial rewards for some.
Alica has been forced to turn to her massive social media presence on TikTok and Instagram, where she has over six million followers combined.
“I am grateful that I earn my money with social media and can save myself another part-time job,'’ she added.
The German athlete is reportedly also a student of media and communication management.
