Amos Kipruto has narrated how being a timekeeper in primary school nurtured his running talent to become one of the most decorated long-distance runners.
Former World Marathon bronze medallist Amos Kipruto has disclosed how being given a role as a timekeeper in primary school nurtured his talent of running to become a top long-distance runner globally.
Kipruto explained that his home was also quite far from school and he would always run to and from to ensure he kept time and inspired fellow students as a great leader.
Speaking to KTN News, Kipruto explained that he would run barefoot but he found joy in that and that’s when he knew he was destined for greatness.

“I became interested in running when I was in primary after I was given a role to become a timekeeper and I would always maintain discipline in school.
“My home was also about 5km from home and I had to always run back and forth to keep time and set a good example to my fellow students.
“That made me become interested in running and I would compete with my fellow students despite lacking shoes,” Kipruto said.

After completing primary school, Kipruto found it difficult to join high school because of lacking school fees to facilitate his studies. This was when he decided to venture into athletics and since then, he has never looked back.
“I sat down and I told myself to chase my dreams of becoming an athlete and that’s why I’m sticking with this career,” he said.
He also opened up about following in the footsteps of the now National Olympic Committee of Kenya president Paul Tergat and the Samwel Wanjiru.
