He is aware of the stiff competition that awaits him as he eyes a slot in the national team but he knows he is capable of pulling off a surprise.

2016 World under-20 3000m Steeplechase champion Amos Kirui wants to make a Team Kenya comeback after three years in the cold.

Kirui, who last represented the country at the 2019 World Cross-country Championships revealed that his main goal this year is to compete at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27.

“My main goal going forward is to make Team Kenya in the World Championships. It feels good to be back,” he said.

The 25-year-old is aware of the tough competition that awaits him as he eyes a slot in the national team but he knows he is capable of pulling off a surprise.

“I know there are many other great athletes but I promise to work hard in training so I can qualify for the event,” he said.

The qualifying time in the men’s 3000m SC for the World Championships currently stands at 8:15.00 and this season, Kirui has run a best time of 8:18.45.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist announced his comeback after a dominant display at the just-concluded Kip Keino Classic where he destroyed a strong field to take top honors in the 3000m SC race.

He stamped authority by crossing the finish line first ahead of the duo of Abraham Kibiwott and Leonard Bett who clocked 8:09.71 and 8:10.02 respectively.

The Keringet-based athlete kickstarted his season with a 10th-place finish over the 5000m race in the second Athletics Kenya meet. He went ahead to finish fifth in the sixth AK meet over the 1500m race before taking top honours over the 3000m SC race.

Speaking about his victory at the Kip Keino Classic, he noted that he did not expect to win considering the strong field the race had attracted.

“The race was good but I was not expecting to win. Although, I had prepared well for this race,” he said.
