Imali, Ndoro, and Amutavi will also be seeking double victory as they line up for the 100m and 200m races.
All roads lead to Thika Stadium for the third Athletics Kenya (AK) meet which has attracted athletes from across the country including two-time Commonwealth Games 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal, Africa 200m silver medallist Maximila Imali and former world 1500m champion Elijah Manangoi.
The men’s and women’s 100m categories will start with the qualifying rounds on Friday 10 March where 249 athletes will fight in the heats staged for the same day. Imali headlines the list having also taken part in the second Athletics Kenya meet where she impressed by winning the final in 11.32.
She will be battling it out with Doreen Waka who was also at the second AK meet but unfortunately finished fifth in the final.
In another qualifying round, Africa 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala’s fiancée Laventa Amutavi will also be battling to secure a slot in the heats. She will face opposition from the likes of Millicent Ndoro who also comes back to the field after a disappointing outing in the AK second meet.
In the men’s category, Dan Kiviasi will be seeking top honours after finishing second in the previous AK meeting. He will, however, face opposition from Boniface Munyoki who returns to the field since 2014.
Richard Ogutu also makes a comeback after failing to make it to the final at the second meet. Kiviasi will also be lining up for the 400m race where he will battle it out with Kinyamal who has also registered for the 200m.
Imali, Ndoro, and Amutavi will be seeking double victory as they line up for the 200m races. Rukia Nusra will highlight the 100m women’s Hurdles.
Over the 800m, Kinyamal highlights the field after a successful outing in the previous meet where he won. He is bound to face opposition from 2019 World Under-20 1500m champion George Meitamei.
In the women’s category, Caroline Nyaga will be racing against new faces who have registered in large numbers.
In the women’s 1500m, 2019 Africa 5000m champion Lilian Rengeruk will face off against Commonwealth Games champion Mary Moraa. Winny Chebet, Nyaga and Virginia Nyambura will also be in the mix.
In the men’s category, Manangoi will take on the tough course with a quest of replicating his previous performance. He participated in the 1500m at the AK second meet and won in 3:46.41. Mangoi will be joined by Weldon Langat.
The women’s 3000m Steeplechase will have World Under-20 champion Faith Cherotich take on a field of other budding athletes.
The men’s category will have Cosmas Kiprotich seek to improve on a fifth-place finish at the previous AK meeting. He will be joined by other athletes including Benjamin Kigen and Albert Kipchirchir among others.
In the 5000m, Nicholas Kiplimo will battle it out with Wesley Langat who will be lining up for his third race this season. He participated in the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country but unfortunately fizzled out to finish 49th. Langat also tried his luck in the 10,000m at the previous AK meet but finished 11th.
Another athlete to watch is Manangoi. Abel Kipsang will also be in the mix, this being his first race of the 2023 season. Teenage sensation Samuel Kibathi will also not be left out. Kibathi had a good start of the season that saw him win the 5000m at the second AK meeting.
In the women’s category, Rebecca Mwangi will be looking to extend her hot streak as she doubles in the 5000m and 10,000m. Mwangi won the 10,000m and 5000m at the second AK meeting. In the 5000m, Mwangi will face opposition from Teresiah Muthoni among other elite athletes.
The 10,000m men’s race will have Geoffrey Rono who will be competing for the first time in 2023. Amos Bett, 2008 Olympic 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop and Abel Mutai will also be in the mix. The women’s race will also have Commonwealth Games champion Emily Ngii and Naomi Chepngeno.
