Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei wants budding athletes to compete in track races before transitioning to the marathon, just like what World Marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge did.
Tuwei revealed that opening their careers with marathons at tender ages affects their health since it is a road race.

AK has been a vital channel in linking athletes to the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon since 2003, helping to launch athletic careers.
He advised that they should first compete in track races to gain experience since that is where most of the greatest athletes got their experience.
“I want to advise the athletes not to compete in the marathons during the early stages of their careers. When you are a young runner, you need to learn how to manage your running and that is well done on the track.
"Through the track, you also gain the experience, and then from that, you can now transition to the marathon. That is the best way if you want to be a powerhouse in the marathon,” he said.

The program resembles the newly introduced education system- Competency-based Curriculum which enables children to identify their talents at an early age.
Some of the great athletes bar Kipchoge, who started off with the track include Hellen Obiri, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan, Ethiopia’s 1500m world record holder Genzebe Dibaba and Almaz Ayana.
Obiri made her debut in the marathon at the 2022 New York City Marathon where she finished second. She went back to the drawing board and made headlines this year after winning the Boston Marathon, her second 42km distance race in her career.
