Athletics Kenya officials have exuded confidence ahead of the All-Africa Games despite being forced to send the lowest number of athletes in this year's edition of the event.

Athletics Kenya remains unfazed ahead of the All-Africa Games despite being forced to send the lowest number of athletes to this year’s edition of the event.

Athletics Kenya Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii noted that the Kenya National Sports Council gave the federation the lowest quarter of athletes due to financial constraints.

Speaking during a press briefing at Riadha House on Thursday, Mutwii insisted that they do not have any fears concerning the medal haul. He compared the team to be chosen like that of the African Cross-country Championships who were little-known but went ahead to perform well.

Speaking at the same time was AK Central Region Chairman David Miano who also exuded confidence that the team would perform well.

“Given this number, I don’t really think our medal count will be low and I want us to bank on hope because Kenyans are Kenyans.

“On the side of athletics, once we give them the 30 slots, and you look at them, God-willing there will be number ones as far as our trials will be concerned then we hope the number ones will do their duties diligently.

“We cannot answer for those other sports like boxing. However, as we do our part as athletics, we also expect the other federations to do their best to deliver,” he said.

Meanwhile, during the previous edition of the event in 2019, Kenya managed to send 61 athletes who represented the country well and jetted back with 20 medals (10 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze).

Other sports disciplines also did their best, but track and field topped the medal tally. In boxing, Kenya managed five medals while in Cycling, they managed one medal. In the remaining disciplines, Kenya also managed one medal each (Swimming, Taekwondo, Volleyball).
