World champion Mary Moraa aims to break 41-year-old 800m record with coach Sang expressing confidence in her potential.

World 800 metres champion Mary Moraa is poised to make history as she gears up for the Absa Kip Keino Classic on April 20.

With her eyes set on surpassing her personal best of 1:56.3, Moraa, under the guidance of coach Alex Sang, is aiming for a sub 1:56 timing in the upcoming race.

In a recent interview Sang expressed confidence in Moraa's abilities.

"It will be a good thing going into Paris with a personal best in 800m and a world record in 600m," she said as per Daily Nation.

Moraa's journey to potentially break Jarmila Kratochvilova's 41-year-old record hasn't been without preparation.

Having recently participated in the African Games and national trials for the World Athletics Relay Championships, Moraa has honed her skills for the upcoming season.

Her victories in the 400m event at the national trials and the African Games 4x400m mixed relays have only fueled her determination for success.

Reflecting on her recent achievements, Moraa expressed her readiness for her specialty event, emphasizing her focus on the Paris Olympic Games.

"My speed is now okay with the 400m races having helped me achieve my goals," she remarked.

With her sights set on the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League and other upcoming races, Moraa is determined to leave her mark in the track and field world.

Moraa's previous performances at the Kip Keino Classic have showcased her prowess, with a notable win last year clocking 1:58.83.

Despite finishing second in 2022, Moraa's consistency and determination have positioned her as a formidable contender in the 800m event.

"I have been doing good in 700m, and that gives me the confidence and hope as I start my 800m season officially at the Kip Keino Classic," Moraa affirmed.

With the national record held by Pamela Jelimo standing at 1:54.01, Sang believes Moraa is capable of achieving remarkable feats on the track.

"Such performances will heighten the urge to attempt the 800m world record time of 1:53.28," Sang added.

With determination in her stride and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Mary Moraa stands at the brink of rewriting history in the world of athletics.

As she prepares to take on the Absa Kip Keino Classic and subsequent events, the question remains: Can Mary Moraa break Jarmila Kratochvilova's 41-year-old record?
