ATHLETICS Cheptegei among first stars announced for Athletissima meet in Lausanne

Cheptegei continues his quest to be in top shape when the World Athletics Championships in Budapest knock around in August 2023 where he will look to defend his 10000m tcrown.

Joshua Cheptegei is among the first list of stars announced for the sixth meeting of this season’s Wanda Diamond League series in Athletissima, Lausanne slated for June 30.

Cheptegei continues his quest to be in top shape when the World Athletics Championships in Budapest knock around in August 2023 where he will look to defend his 10000m tcrown.

The event organisers have confirmed that the world record-holder in the 5000m and 10,000m, will only compete in the 5000m event.

Cheptegei, is no stranger to Athletissima, having previously finished third and fourth in the 5000m event at the meeting in 2017 and 2019 respectively, he is hungry for success this year.

Cheptegei is also hoping to claim a second Diamond Trophy in 2023, having become the first Ugandan athlete ever to win the title back in 2019.

At the opening series of the 2020 Wanda Diamond League in Monaco, he went one better by breaking the broke the long-standing world 5000m record, clocking a stunning time of 12:35.36.

The Ugandan Olympic and world gold medallist has had a strong comeback from injury he suffered during the 2022 World Athletics Championships that stopped his charge to defend his 5000m world title.

Cheptegei finished third at the World Cross Country Championship with a time of 29:37 in Bathurst, and securing second place in his second attempt at the half marathon in New York in his only two race this year.

Joining Cheptegei in Lausanne are other renowned athletes like Femke Bol and Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Bol, the Dutch sensation and world indoor 400m record-holder, will be competing in the 400m hurdles, aiming for her third consecutive Athletissima victory.

Ingebrigtsen, the Norwegian star and world indoor 1500m record-holder, will be showcasing his talent in the 1500m event, where he previously won with a time of 3:29.05.

Other notable athletes, including Swiss stars Mujinga Kambundji and Simon Ehammer, will also be vying for glory in Lausanne.

Kambundji, a global medallist, will be sprinting in the 100m event, while Ehammer, a long jump specialist, will be aiming to impress in front of the home crowd.

The Wanda Diamond League is athletics' premier one-day series, comprising 14 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. 

Athletes compete for points at the 13-series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene on 16th-17th September.
