He added that he feels fulfilled when he sees an athlete improving on their performance despite how slow the progress might be.

Athletics coach Patrick Sang, the magic behind the success of world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and double world marathon record holder Faith Kipyegon among many other athletes, has shared some tips on how he has molded athletes to become great versions of themselves.

Sang revealed that he uses a technique called the macro-cycle of training which has the resting phase and the development stage which includes the preparation for the season.

He added that there is a pre-competition phase where there is a structure of weekly training sessions that are done on a daily basis.

“The structure of that cycle is that you have an athlete doing two sessions of either endurance speed training or speed training.

That is the general structure of the weekly sessions…it is a composition of speed, endurance, strength training, and recovery runs,” he said.

He revealed that the best way to execute training and achieve all the targets is to conduct the training sessions on the track.

“Let’s say in a certain week the athletes are competing in the 10,000m on a particular track, when you go back there after two weeks, you’ll find it easy to determine whether they have improved on their speed or not,” he said.

Sang added that the track is uniform and it becomes easier to monitor the progress of athletes in terms of the times they achieve.

“What is really important for me is that it’s not all about the performance…it’s how somebody moves from point A to B.

For instance, you can have an athlete who has a certain ability and if they put 100% effort and achieve the full potential, to me, that’s the best thing,” he said.

He added that he feels fulfilled when he sees an athlete improving on their performance despite how slow the progress might be.
