Daniel Simiu has disclosed his coach's wise words that prevented him from dropping out of the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country despite having a stitch.

World 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu has disclosed the wise words from his coach Erik Kogo that propelled him to victory at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country on Saturday, February 3 at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.

Simiu narrated that he encountered a stomach problem during the race and he almost dropped out due to the pain but Kogo’s words kept ringing in his head and he had to keep going.

He was the eventual winner of the race, crossing the finish line in 29:16. World Under20 Cross-country champion Ishmael Kipkurui clocked 29:18 for a second-place finish while Weldon Langat completed the podium in 29:26.

“In the second lap, I had a stitch problem and my stomach was very painful and I wanted to drop out of the race.

“However, my coach encouraged me to keep going, and, in the morning, we talked about the race and he made it clear that there was no dropping out of the race. I think he is happy now that I have finished the race and won,” Simiu said.

2024 being an Olympic year, the World Half Marathon silver medallist is eyeing the global Games where he intends to shed the Mr. Silver tag.

He also promised that something good might be in store for his fans if he maintains his training routine and remains focused on his races.

“It’s a huge honour to get silver since not everybody has the ability to even finish in the podium bracket. This year is different, it’s an Olympic year and we are all gearing up for Paris.

“I think something good is cooking…something good is in store. We can talk about the Olympics when that time comes,” Simiu said.
