Uganda dominated proceedings on April 23 at the 2023 Madrid Marathon, winning gold in men's and women's categories.
The 2023 edition, dubbed 'The Zurich Rock 'n' Roll Running Series Madrid Marathon' saw Geoffrey Kusuro win the men's category (2:10:29), and Doreen Chesang did the same in the women's category (2:26:31).
Kusuro fought stiff competition from Kenyans Sila Kiptoo and Bernard Kimkemboi, who settled for second and third, respectively.
It was a close race for the East Africans as Kusuro won by a couple of seconds, upstaging Sila Kiptoo, who posted 2:10:31 and Kimkemboi 2:10:32 in a lightning finish for the grand prize.
Doreen Chesang took a commanding lead in the women's race and posted 2:26:31. Ethiopia came in second place, Fetale Tsegaye at 2:32: 18 and Marta Galimany, first Spanish classified and bronze medalist posted 2:37:47.
The Madrid Marathon makes her debut in the course.
In a related development, her senior compatriot and namesake, Stella Chesang, set a national record in the Hamburg Marathon as she posted 2:20:2 to settle for third place.
Stella Chesang was also running her Hamburg debut.
