A groundbreaking 2024 season has seen Mondo Duplantis and Yaroslava Mahuchikh rewarded as the World Athletics Field Athletes of the Year.
Following a record-breaking 2024 season, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Mondo Duplatis and Ukrainian high jump queen Yaroslava Mahuchikh have been named the 2024 World Athletics Field Athletes of the Year.
Both Olympic champions in Paris, Duplantis retained his title from Tokyo 2020 with a height of 6.00m, after Sam Kendricks failed to clear higher than 5.95m. He then jumped 6.10m to break the Olympic Record set by Thiago Braz at the Rio 2016 Olympics and finally jumped 6.25m, on his third attempt at that height, setting a new world record.
He surpassed his world record three times during the season, eventually taking it to 6.26m to win the Diamond League title in Brussels.
Likewise, Mahuchikh won the gold medal in Paris, jumping 2.00m to become the new Olympic champion. It was Ukraine's first individual gold of the Paris Games, and she became the third Ukrainian Olympic champion in athletics after Inessa Kravets in the triple jump in 1996 and Nataliya Dobrynska in the pentathlon in 2008.
In July, she broke the women's high jump world record with a height of 2.10m at the Paris Diamond League in Paris, erasing Stefka Kostadinova's previous record of 2.09m set at the 1987 World Championships, which was one of the longest-standing records in the books.
