Edwin Kiptoo was in a class of his own as he won the 40th edition of the Athens Marathon in a course record time.
The 2022 Telcel Mexico City Marathon Edwin Kiptoo has won the Athens Marathon in a course record time of 2:10:34.
Going into the race, Kiptoo had already made his intentions of attacking the course record clear and as he was competing, he was surely focused on the prize.

Luke Kiprop and Naomi Chepkorir defied the foggy weather to clinch top honours at the Iten International Marathon.
The 30-year-old slowly shook off his main challengers in the second half of the course and was looking very poised to go for the title.
In the last 10km, it was clear that Kiptoo was going to win the race since he was running alone. Another Kenyan, Rhonzai Kilimo came in second at 2:12:36 and Felicien Muhitira of Rwanda was third in the same time.

Kiptoo was in great form going into the race since he achieved an impressive season-best time of 2:08:56 at the Seoul Marathon, finishing seventh in the race.

ATHLETICS Edwin Kiptoo targeting course record at the 40th edition of the Athens Marathon
Edwin Kiptoo will be aiming to break the course record set by Felix Kandie in 2014 at this year's edition of the Athens Marathon.
He then finished third and eighth at the XL Mexico City Marathon Telcel 2023 and ASML Marathon Eindhoven respectively.
Meanwhile, Kenyan runners have won the race 17 times since 2001, including Felix Kandie, who had set the previous record of 2:10:37 in 2014.
In the women’s race, Soukaina Atanane of Morocco won the women’s race in 2:31:52. Kenya’s Caroline Jepchirchir finished second in 2:32:19, and Greece’s Gloria Privileggio came in third at 2:43:20.

Ferdinand Omanyala has cleared the air on whether the 400m clash between him and Faith Kipyegon will eventually happen.
According to the race organisers, a record 20,322 runners were registered to start at the village of Marathon, beating the previous record of 20,041 set in 2019.
Attendance had dropped off by more than half in the first two races held after the coronavirus pandemic, in 2021 and 2022.
