Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah remains upbeat despite a worrying start to her 2024 campaign following a ninth-place finish at the Prefontaine Classic.
Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah seems unbothered by her poor start to the season after a disappointing outing at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.
Thompson-Herah finished ninth in the 100m at the Eugene Diamond League in a race won by world champion Sha’Carri Richardson to the surprise of many despite the race being billed as a clash between the two.
The Jamaican clocked 11.30 for ninth place but being her first race of the year, she is confident of getting better as she eyes her Olympics title defence.

Why Sha'Carri Richardson relishes competing on home soil after clinching first season victory
American sprint queen Sha’Carri Richardson has revealed why she enjoys running on home soil after registering her first win of the season following dissapointments in Shanghai and Suzhou last month.
“Journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, 2024 first step,” Thompson-Herah said via an Instagram post.
It was not a good outing for Thompson-Herah who has won twice in Eugene in 2021 and 2022, clocking 10.54 and 10.79 respectively, and the race will have given her an insight into what she needs to do to achieve her optimum.
She will, however, draw optimism from her season’s start in 2021, when she clocked 11.21 in her first race of the year, before going on to win double gold in both 100m and 200m at the Tokyo Olympics.
The 31-year-old was a late inclusion into the Prefontaine Classic but will hope to get better as the season progresses before her title defence in Paris.
