Athletics Kenya has named a strong marathon provisional squad for the Paris Olympics that includes Eliud Kipchoge, Kelvin Kiptum and Hellen Obiri

Marathon great Eliud Kipchoge will have to contend with stiff competition from world record holder Kelvin Kiptum at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The two are among 20 strong men and women named by Athletics Kenya in the provisional list for the Olympics with the country looking for early preparations.

Kipchoge and Kiptum had already expressed their interest in featuring at the Olympics and have got their wish, setting the stage for a bruising battle in Paris.

The two are joined on the provisional list by Vincent Ngetich, second at the Berlin Marathon this year, Rotterdam Marathon runners-up Timothy Kiplagat, former Chicago and Boston Marathon champion Benson Kipruto, Bernard Koech, two-time New York Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor, Cyprian Kotut, 2022 London Marathon champion Amos Kipruto and Titus Kipruto.

In the women's category, Boston and New York Marathon champion Hellen Obiri leads the list that also has former world record holder Brigid Kosgei, ex-New York and London Marathon winner Peres Jepchirchir, Tokyo Marathon champion Rosemary Wanjiru, former world champion Marathon Ruth Chepngetich, former world half marathon record holder Joycilline Jepkosgei, Sheila Chepkirui, Judith Jeptum Korir, Selly Chepyego and Sharon Lokedi, who won the New York Marathon last year before finishing third last month.

The selected runners will be keeping their fingers crossed as the team will be scaled down to five in January, three to compete and two reserves.
