Kenyans have given different opinions following Eliud Kipchoge’s difficult outing in Tokyo where he suffered his worst-ever marathon loss.

Kenyans have issued mixed opinions following Eliud Kipchoge’s 10th-place finish at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon on Sunday.

Kipchoge recorded his worst-ever placing since his marathon debut in Hamburg 11 years ago when he clocked 2:06:50 to finish 10th while fellow Kenyan Benson Kipruto won in a course-record 2:02:16 ahead of countrymen Timothy Kiplagat (2:02:55) and Vincent Ngetich (2:04:18).

While the marathon great has explained what went wrong in the Japanese capital, Kenyans have already provided varied views on his performance with some even claiming he should hang up his spikes.

“A good dancer knows when to exit the stage. Eliud Kipchoge has done well and it's time for him to groom another talent. He finished 10th in the Tokyo Marathon and I think he should retire,” said a fan.

“Eliud Kipchoge at this rate he is just spoiling the good legacy he had made. Retirement is calling,” commented another.

“I remember Paul Tergat finished position 11 in 2004 Athens Olympics and retired. Kipchoge should apply the same.”

However, some fans have dismissed the notion of Kipchoge retiring given this was just the third time he was finishing out of the top two in 19 marathons.

“No matter what, Eliud Kipchoge is still the G.O.A.T, you've really inspired us,” posted a fan online.

“King Eliud Kipchoge has achieved everything any athlete could dream of. Now, he is using his brand to earn good money just like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Then, someone living in a small bedsitter is asking him to retire?”

“Congratulations team. That was exemplary performance and that new blood is what we needed in the team, not relying on monopoly each and every time.”

“I don’t think Eliud Kipchoge has fallen, I think his Tokyo performance was deliberate to give a new talent (Benson Kipruto) light & platform especially after Kelvin Kiptum’s demise and the theories that ensued, he had to make difficult choices.”

There is also a feeling among a section of Kenyans that Kipchoge might have been affected by the online bullying subjected to him in the wake of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s tragic death.

“Kenyans are to blame for Eliud Kipchoge finishing 10th in Japan. The mental torture you have put him over the Kelvin Kiptum thing is massive,” observed another Kenyan. “Kenyans should apologise to Eliud and at least stop messing him mentally.”

“The amount of bullying Eliud Kipchoge endured after the demise of Kelvin Kiptum definitely took a toll on his mental well-being,” another one said.

“Can't believe some unenlightened people are dissing and insulting the GOAT Eliud Kipchoge. This legend has an iron will, pushing through pain and fatigue like a boss. That's what separates the greats from the rest.”

Kipchoge will now have to regroup and lay his strategy as he seeks to win a third straight Olympics gold in Paris.
