In the hotly contested race, Spain’s Maria Perez carried the day as she cut the tape in a time of 1:26:51.

All hopes were on race walker Emily Ngii to deliver in the just-concluded women’s 20km walk race at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary but tough competition pulled her out of title contention.

The Team Kenya captain had exhumed confidence in making a statement in the global showpiece but the favour was not on her side this time around.

Ngii struggled to keep pace with the strong Spaniards and Italians and was lagging behind most of the time. She failed to finish the race after being handed two red cards for violating the World Athletics race walking rules.

In the hotly contested race, Spain’s Maria Perez carried the day as she cut the tape in a time of 1:26:51 ahead of Australia’s Jemima Montag who clocked 1:27:16. Italy’s Antonella Palmisano completed the podium in 1:27:26.
