Wunderkind Emmanuel Wanyonyi has relived the memories of David Rudisha following his relentless run at the Kenyan Olympic trials where he clocked the fastest time in the world since Rudisha’s retirement in the men's 800m final at the Nyayo National Stadium.

World 800m silver medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi has bounced back from his fall on Friday to claim top honors in the men’s 800m final at the Kenyan Olympic trials, held at Nyayo National Stadium.

Wanyonyi ran the fastest time in the world since David Rudisha’s retirement, clocking a world-leading and Personal best time of 1:41.27 to cross the finish line. The time the 19-year-old clocked is also the third fastest in the world behind Rudisha’s world record time of 1:40.91 and his second-best time of 1:41.54.

The wunderkind explained that he was tripped yesterday and he could not allow that to happen again since he would miss a chance of competing at the Olympic Games.

“I was tripped yesterday and I fell and as you can see, my leg is swollen…I didn’t want to repeat the same mistake.

“I learnt to just run my race and I told myself that anything happens for a reason and I told myself that anything can happen today and I might be tripped again and miss the Olympics just like that.

“I feel good and I’m training well with the hope that God will give us good health and help us run well at the Olympics,” Wanyonyi said.

Meanwhile, Wanyonyi breathed a sigh of relief after Athletics Kenya reinstated him to the 800m final after the fall that saw him miss a podium finish.

During the semifinal, the 19-year-old took the lead then tried to slow down his semi-final but he got overtaken in the last 300m and as he tried to catch up, he tripped and fell.

He vowed to do well in the final and he has delivered what he promised. “I am in good shape and on Saturday, it will be about executing a good race. I have the desire to win and to make the team for the Olympics. I will have to think how I run in the final, I cannot use the same tactic I used today [Friday],” he said on Friday.
