Kenyan athletes Faith Cherotich and Emmanuel Wanyonyi receive 2023 World Athletics Rising Stars awards

Kenyan teenagers Faith Cherotich and Emmanuel Wanyonyi proved their mettle on the senior athletics stage, making their mark at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.

The duo, celebrated for their remarkable achievements at the World U20 level, were honored at the revamped World Athletics awards gala in Monaco, France, on Monday night.

Faith Cherotich, a name synonymous with excellence in the steeplechase, clinched the bronze medal in the 3000m steeplechase, while Emmanuel Wanyonyi secured the silver medal in the 800m.

Their exceptional performances did not go unnoticed, and they were both named the 2023 World Athletics Rising Stars.

An elated Emmanuel Wanyonyi was the first to react to this prestigious recognition.

"I feel so happy today to win this trophy. I didn't expect this," Wanyonyi exclaimed, overwhelmed by the honor bestowed upon him.

Faith Cherotich, who had previously claimed world U20 bronze in 2021 and gold in 2022, continued to dazzle audiences with her outstanding talent.

She not only secured a place on the world U20 all-time list but also finished third in the Diamond League Final in Eugene with an impressive time of 8:59.65.

Cherotich also showcased her prowess in cross-country, finishing fourth in the U20 race at the World Cross Country Championships.

"I'd like to congratulate all the winners of the awards, and again, I'd like to say thank you to my fans around the world and my coach Bernard Rono-Kalyet and the people managing me," Faith Cherotich expressed her gratitude for the support she has received on her journey to success.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the 2021 world U20 gold medallist, had an outstanding year in 2023.

Not only did he secure a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, but he also became the Diamond League champion, clinching the trophy with a personal best time of 1:42.80.

Wanyonyi's dominance was further evident as he triumphed in the Diamond League races in Rabat, Paris, and Xiamen.

Additionally, he played a crucial role in Kenya's victorious world cross country mixed relay team.
