Emmanuel Wanyonyi was in a class of his own as he obliterated a strong field to win the 2km race at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country.
Reigning World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened his 2024 season in style, dominating the men’s 2km race at Sirikwa Classic Cross-country happening at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.
Wanyonyi led from gun to tape, cutting the tape in 5:41.20 ahead of Victor Kipkirui and Edwin Kiprono who clocked respective times of 5:42.10 and 5:45.90.

The former World Under-20 800m champion in a post-race interview emphasised on the importance of opening his season with cross-country. He noted that cross-country races ensure that athletes have a great start to the season and it is great build up for the same.

Lilian Kasait has her eyes set on the World Cross-country Championships and she has given an update of how she is preparing for the same.
“I feel great and I’m happy to have won today…I thank God for the far he has brought me. I’m just building up slowly through cross-country.
“I’m now training and I’ll check how my body responds and how I will select my races because the season is still young,” Wanyonyi said.
Last year was Wanyonyi’s season of breakthrough where he bagged the silver medal at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary before upsetting the World champion, Marco Arop, to also take the Diamond League final trophy.

In-form Daniel Simiu is breathing fire ahead of making his debut at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country Championships on Saturday.
He admitted that there was a lot of things he learnt from the 2023 season and going into 2024, he will be looking to implement the crucial lessons as he seeks Olympic qualification.
“As I continue competing in the senior level, that’s how I gain experience in the 800m. so far, I’m running well and I believe that investing in my training is key if I have to keep on winning.
“I know it is not going to be easy and making the cut to the national team is not easy, so my next target is competing at the Olympic Games,” he said.
Meanwhile, second-place finisher Kipkirui was over the moon after bagging finally getting the chance to compete at the event. “I’m very happy today and I thank God for enabling me to get to this level and compete at such an event,” the Keringet-based athlete said.
