She added that coach Charles Ng’eno changed her life by motivating her to become a better athlete through his training techniques and encouraging words.

Double world record holder Faith Kipyegon has disclosed that the memory that stands out in her athletics career is when she ran barefoot during the 2010 and 2011 World Cross-country Championships.

During her international debut in 2010, she finished fourth and later bettered her fourth place to win the 2011 edition of the event.

She revealed that the memories stand out for her since she believes they will be an inspiration to many young girls who want to be like her.

“The memory that stands out for me is running barefoot…I believe the photos that are circulating at the moment will motivate many young girls who want to be like me. I think I’ve left a legacy of a high standard. From running barefoot, I’m now a double world record holder,” Kipyegon said during an interview with Al Jazeera.

She added that winning the 1500m at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France, with a time of 4:09.48 and breaking the championship record in the process was a sign to her that she was destined to be a great athlete.

She noted that coach Charles Ng’eno changed her life by motivating her to become a better athlete through his training techniques and encouraging words.

“After I made the team to the World Youth competitions, I realised I have the potential to be a great athlete. I met with coach Charles Ng’eno who introduced me to running and training. He told me that I was going to be a good athlete and that’s where I started,” she said.

She added that from starting her career at a young age, she maintained the discipline and hard work that have seen her be crowned a two-time world and Olympic champion on top of her records.

“It has been a long journey…I started with running around the school and I never knew that I would be a World or Olympic champion someday. I kept on with the discipline and hard work and this is where I am placed right now…I’m surprised,” she said.
