The duo faces an acid test as they line up against a strong field that has attracted Olympians and world medalists.

Olympic 800m silver medallist Ferguson Rotich will be opening his international outdoor tour at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday, April 29.

His only competitive outing in 2023 was at the second Athletics Kenya Meeting where he raced in the heats and did not proceed to the final. He will be hoping to start on a clean slate when he sets foot on the track at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

The 2019 World 800m bronze medallist has a personal best time of 1:42.54 and will be joined by compatriots Koitatoi Kidali and reigning Africa 1500m champion Abel Kipsang who will be kickstarting his outdoor season as well.

The Kenyan trio will be hoping to upset their competitors by taking the top three slots but it will not be a walk in the park with the presence of Ethiopia’s Ephrem Mekonnen. The 22-year-old goes into the race in impressive form.

This year, he competed at the Djibouti International Meeting where he won the 800m race in 1:47.09. He will also be fighting for a podium finish in the race.

Another one to watch out for is South Africa’s Tshepo Tshite who will be lining up with a PB of 1:44.59. This will be Tshite’s first race over the 800m as he opened his season with races over the 5000m and 1500m.

He was also part of the relay team at the World Cross-country championships earlier in the year where he steered the team to finish fourth.

Great Britain’s Ethan Hussey will also be in the race with an aim of upsetting the big boys. The 20-year-old is the world under-20 800m bronze medallist. He settled for third place over the two-lap race at the third ASA Grand Prix on Wednesday, April 26. Hussey has a life time best of 1:46.61.

The 2016 Rio Olympics 800m bronze medallist Clayton Murphy of USA will be joined by compatriots Jonah Koech and Erik Sowinski. The duo of Tshepiso Mashalela and Boitumelo Masilo will also also be looking to shine on home soil.
