Reigning world half-marathon champion is aiming to conquer Prague half marathon leveraging past setbacks and a strong field as motivational catalysts.

The 2024 Prague Half Marathon is a race steeped in history, marking its 25th edition this year, and all eyes will be on Sabastian Kimaru Sawe, the reigning World Half Marathon Champion.

Despite a recent seventh-place finish at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia, Sawe is primed for an outstanding performance in Prague.

Here are five reasons why Sabastian Sawe is the runner to watch.

1.Exceptional road form

Sawe's road racing credentials are formidable. His personal best of 58:29, achieved at the Valencia Half Marathon, underscores his speed and endurance on the pavement.

This time places him at the top of the entry list for Prague and indicates that he is in the elite tier of global half marathon runners.

His proven ability to post fast times over the half marathon distance is a key indicator of his potential to excel in Prague.

2.Resilience and recovery

Following a less than ideal finish at the World Cross Country Championships, Sawe has demonstrated remarkable resilience.

His ability to quickly refocus and prepare for the next challenge speaks volumes about his mental toughness.

Athletes who can bounce back from setbacks often carry a psychological edge, and Sawe's determination to aim high in Prague could see him turning his recent experiences into a strong motivational tool.

3.Experience on the global stage

Sawe's extensive experience in international competitions has honed his race strategy and competition readiness.

Participating in events like the World Athletics Cross Country Championships and the World Half Marathon Championships has not only tested his abilities against some of the best athletes in the world but also taught him valuable lessons in race dynamics and pacing.

4.Competitive field

The presence of strong contenders such as Geoffrey Toroitich Kipchumba and Patrick Kabirech Mosin, both from Kenya, along with other elite athletes, adds depth to the competition.

While this might seem like a challenge, it is also a significant advantage for Sawe. Racing against high-caliber athletes pushes competitors to perform at their best.

Sawe's familiarity with his compatriots' racing styles and strategies could give him the upper hand in a tightly contested race.

5.The pursuit of the course record

The current course record of 58:47, set by Ethiopia’s Atsedu Tsegay, is within Sawe's reach, considering his personal best.

The motivation to etch his name into the history books by breaking the course record could provide an additional boost to his performance.

Achieving such a feat would not only be a personal triumph for Sawe but also a moment of pride for his team and country.
