Gabby Thomas Parents

Gabby Thomas’ mom, Jennifer Randall, is an American and works as the Dunn Family Endowed Professor of Psychometrics and Test Development at the University of Michigan’s School of Education. When Gabby was 10, her mother moved the family to Massachusetts so that she could finish her own PhD while teaching. “I think watching her as I was growing up and how hard she worked, that’s impacted me in ways that I probably can’t even recognize,” Thomas told Olympics.com.

Gabby’s dad, Desmond Thomas was born in Jamaica and forged a solid career as a defensive back at Duke University. He was a college football player, and Gabby attributes her speed to her dad’s genes. “Everyone knows that I am Jamaican because I do believe that that’s where I get my fast roots from. I’m just not going to sugarcoat it that’s what it is.”

Unfortunately, her parents separated when Gabby was four.

Gabby Thomas Twin Brother and Siblings

Gabby Thomas has a twin brother named Andrew, who is now a graphic designer in Idaho. She also has three younger siblings: Desi, Tyler, and Kim (a total of 3 brothers and one sister).

Thomas pursued her undergraduate degree in the sciences, fueled by her passion for neurobiology, which was inspired by two of her brothers.

“I have a twin brother with serious ADHD who was receiving neurofeedback therapy,” Thomas shared once. “My other younger brother has Asperger’s Syndrome. Both of my brothers drew me to neurobiology.”

Gabby Thomas Education

Academics were always a priority for Thomas, who told NBC News she was inspired to succeed at the highest level by her single mother—who waitressed and took classes to become a professor while raising Thomas and her brother. Her hard work paid off with admission to Harvard University, where she studied neurobiology with a minor in global health and health policy and a citation in French. One of the classes she took, on disparities in the US health care system and how they impact people of color, would inspire her to pursue a master’s in public health at the University of Texas, which she completed in May 2023.

Gabby Thomas graduated from Harvard University

It was at Harvard that she began winning accolades in track. She broke the NCAA indoor collegiate record in the women’s 200-meter. Thomas won a whopping 22 conference titles in six different track events as a student and became the first NCAA sprint champion in Ivy League history with a winning time of 22.38 seconds in her now-signature 200-meter race.

Gabby Thomas Olympics

Gabby Thomas made her Olympic debut at the delayed Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she won a bronze medal in the 200m event and a silver in the 4x100m relay. With that, she became the first Harvard graduate to win a track and field Olympic medal.

At Paris 2024 Olympics, her exploits saw her nicknamed the 'golden girl' after winning three gold medals in the 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m. Thanks to her performance, Thomas is the first Harvard grad to win an Olympic gold medal for track and field.
