Namwamba revealed that they requested Athletics Kenya to come up with a list of all athletes whose dues had not been cleared.

For quite some time, local athletes have been lamenting that their dues have not been settled when they raise the country’s flag high in international events like the World Championships and African Games.

One notable example of an athlete who took his bitter rant to Facebook was 2015 World javelin champion Julius Yego who lamented that athletes who represented the country at the 2022 Africa Senior Athletics Championships were not paid their dues and was requesting the Sports CS Ababu Namwamba to address the issue.

In a post, he said: “It’s such a shame to a country known around and celebrated in athletics to pay such to its athletes.

"It has also to be noted that in some championships in the calendar of athletics, some athletes have never been paid their medal rewards.

"The team that represented Kenya at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius has never been paid a year later.

"Salaries and Remuneration Commission please take time and review the allowance scheme for sportsmen and women in Kenya and put up a policy that these patriots deserve.”

However, these cries are soon coming to an end since Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has promised that all athletes will be paid their pending dues.

Namwamba revealed that they requested Athletics Kenya to come up with a list of all athletes whose dues had not been cleared so they can begin remitting the funds to them.

We have pending payments and the records are as per Athletics Kenya. We are using the records provided by AK and we asked them to give us a schedule of all claims that have been outstanding.

"And that goes beyond 2015 actually…all those claims are part of the things that we need to address,” the CS said, during the Champions Reception held on Friday at the Safari Park Hotel.

He added that they will embrace the old scheme of payment for the athletes who had not been up to last year.

From the start of 2023, he revealed that the athletes who have done well, like triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon, will be paid using the new scheme.

We have a revised scheme but we are paying them to what the other scheme had in place. You can’t apply the law retrospectively…the law is applied in the present and proactively.

"We will pay according to the scale of what existed at that time. But those who win now, we shall apply the new scheme,” he added.
