Athletics Kenya have been forced to postpone their second meet due to heavy rainfall that saw the Thika Stadium flood.

Athletics Kenya has announced the cancellation of the second track and field meeting at the Thika Municipality Stadium in Thika, Kiambu County.

Team Kenya head coach Julius Kirwa expressed his concerns about athletes possibly picking injuries and explained that it would be wise to have the events cancelled and pushed forward to Saturday, December 16.

“We came in the morning and learnt that it rained the whole night until today so the field was filled with water.

Athletes could not compete here because of the unfortunate happenings. Many athletes had come to compete here to gauge their form but we can’t allow them to compete.

We have been waiting for the weather to change but it has not been possible and we have requested a change of venue,” Kirwa said.

Kirwa explained that they will work around the clock to ensure that the athletes can compete.

Meanwhile, AK competitions coordinator and Vice Chair Paul Mutui also expressed his frustrations but assured that everything is on course.

Mutui noted that they had encountered the issue of registration since they were advising the athletes to register before the D-day of the event but many of them did not heed the advice.

“It rained so much early in the morning and the Thika track is not tartan, so it looked so muddy, and no running could take place.

We thought it would be wise to tell athletes that it’s not possible to continue with the event today. We started looking for an alternative venue because we couldn’t stage the event here (Thika Stadium).

We thought it would be better to do away with hosting the event at the Thika Stadium and look for another venue where we could get a tartan track.

We finally landed at Lang’ata Barracks and we are trying to plan so that the central region can organise with the defense forces. We want the event to happen for one day,” he added.
