Team Nigeria dominated the medals table on Day 1 of the African Championships in Douala as Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Ashley Anumba clinched gold medals respectively.
Nigerian Record holder in the men's Shot Put Chukwuebuka Enekwechi continued his fine form this season at the African Championships in Douala, claiming his third-consecutive gold medal.
The African Games champion threw a distance of 21.20m to equal his Championship Record set two years ago in Mauritius and extend his dominant position of being the best in the continent.
With his victory, Enekwechi became the third thrower to win three straight titles in the men's Shot Put at the African Championships behind Egypt's Ahmed Mohamed Ashoush (1984, 1985, and 1988) and South Africa's Burger Lambrechts (1998, 2010, and 2012).

Ashley Anumba leads Nigerian sweep in the women's Discus
In another historic performance in the women's Discus final, Ashley Anumba led a clean sweep of medals as the throwers reignited the same feat achieved at Durban 2016.
Anumba surprised her more experienced teammates with a last-round throw of 59.30m to claim the gold medal - the second-farthest winning throw in the championship history behind Chinwe Okoro's record of 59.79m set at Marrakech 2014.

Ashley Anumba exceptional form this season is an indicator that for the first time in history, Nigeria may be sending two Discus throwers to the World Championships.
Obiageri Amaechi settled for the silver medal with a best effort of 58.80m, while veteran Chioma Onyekwere completed the podium sweep with a last-round throw of 57.96m.
By doing this, the three throwers replicated the same feat of Nwanneka Okwelogu (gold), Okoro (silver), and Onyekwere (bronze) attained in 2016. Also, it'll be the third time a country will have a clean sweep in the event after South Africa (1993), Nigeria in 2016, and now 2024.
