Hellen Obiri and Co. will be competing for the Ksh 10 million prize money purse set aside for the top performers at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.

Reigning New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri will be among the dozens of runners competing for the $60,000 (Approximately Ksh 10 million) prize purse on Sunday, January 14.

The winners of both the men’s and women’s races will each pocket more than Ksh 1.5 million with the rest of the top performers also walking away with a good sum of money.

The Aramco Houston Half Marathon is one of the fastest and most competitive half marathons on the continent and attracts athletes from all walks of life.

Obiri will lock horns with some of the finest female runners including Sara Hall, who previously set an American record in the half marathon here in 2022.

The reigning Boston Marathon champion will also be up against compatriot Edna Kiplagat and Lonah Salpeter of Israel. American Weini Kelati, the United States 5km champion, will make her half marathon debut. She joins other American contenders like Tristin Van Ord and Nell Rojas.

The men’s race will see Galen Rupp, the 2016 Olympic Marathon bronze medallist from the United States, and Abel Kipchumba of Kenya, who boasts a personal best of 58:07 lock horns.

Other notable contenders include Jemal Yimer and Milkesha Mengesha from Ethiopia, and Wesley Kiptoo of Kenya.

Meanwhile, Carly Caulfield, the Race Director and General Manager of the Houston Marathon Committee, remarked: “This elite field, from legends like Edna Kiplagat to rising stars like Mo Ahmed, showcases the best in long-distance running.

As we approach an exciting Olympic year, fans in Houston will witness potential Olympic medalists in action.”
