Beatrice Chebet hopes to emulate Vivian Cheruiyot in Paris following her explosive run at the Prefontaine Classic.

World 5000m bronze medallist Beatrice Chebet has revealed plans to double in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Chebet stunned the world during the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday night to claim the top prize and set the world record in the 10,000m, an event she was just running for the second time since 2020 during an Athletics Kenya weekend meet.

Chebet stayed in the lead for almost the whole race and looked very comfortable, as if she had been running the 10,000m for years. She beat Guday Tsegay, the world 10,000m champion, who was going for the world record.

In a post-race interview, the former world 5000m silver medallist noted that she will be following in the footsteps of Vivian Cheruiyot and doubling in her specialty and the 10,000m.

During the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Cheruiyot doubled and won the 5000m and settled for silver in the 10,000m.

“I came to run the 10,000m in order to get qualification and a great position for Paris because I want to double. I’m happy because it’s my first time to be in an Olympic team and with good health and hard work, I will medal again in Paris and that will be my favourite medal,” Chebet said.

The two-time world cross country champion has been off to a great start this season and has just proven that she is not stopping at anything.

Chebet set the 5km road race world record on New Year’s Eve and then proceeded to successfully defend her cross-country title at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

At the Prefontaine Classic, Chebet became the first woman to run 29 minutes, clocking an astonishing 28:54.14 to win ahead of Tsegay who timed a personal best time of 29:05.92. Lilian Kasait completed the podium, clocking a personal best time of 29:26.89.
