Upcoming 1500m runner Mary Ekiru has opened up on how Mary Ngugi's camp has impacted her life positively and given her a chance to showcase her talent on the track.

African Games 1500m bronze medallist Mary Ekiru has opened up on how training in Mary Ngungi’s camp has impacted her life.

Ekiru explained that she has enjoyed a great time, being in Ngugi’s camp, who is a mentor and adviser to the young girls in the camp. She noted that they are well taken care of and their main focus is usually on training, that’s why she is always able to perform well.

Ngungi, the reigning Roma Ostia Half Marathon champion, was motivated to start an only-girls training camp following the brutal murder of Agnes Tirop. In the camp, she also teaches young girls how to stand up for themselves.

“Her camp has helped me a lot because she usually advises us and we are able to train well and she has always taken well care of us.

“When in her camp, our main aim is to train and that’s why there is so much improvement in our performances,” the newly-crowned national champion said.

The 23-year-old added that if she makes the cut to the Africa Athletics Senior Championships, she will be keen to bag a gold medal after Ethiopians snatched it from the African Games.

Ekiru is chasing Olympic glory and has plans to qualify for the global bonanza before time elapses and she has hopes to achieve her dreams. The qualifying time for the women’s 1500m currently stands at 4:02.50.

“When I go to Cameroon I will work extra hard…the more I participate, the more I’m able to gain more experience.

“I’m still yet to qualify for the Olympic Games but I’m still working hard with the hope of making the cut. I need to improve on my training through working on my speed work and build up,” she added.
