After the Kip Keino Classic, Were will be looking to make Team Kenya for the World Championships in Budapest.

After a successful start to his season, hurdler Wiseman Were is bubbling with confidence ahead of the Kip Keino Classic on Saturday, May 13 as he seeks to better his time.

Were won last year’s race in 50.10 and he will be hoping to go one better as he lines up against a strong field at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

“I am very much ready for the event and I am hoping to run under 49 seconds,” bullish Were said.

Were has been off to a good start this season and he will be keen to display the same exploits going forward. He opened his season with an indoor tour in France where he competed in the 400m and finished among the top five in the three races he competed in.

He also competed at the second Athletics Kenya meet where he won the 110m Hurdles and 200m races.

He then kickstarted his international outdoor season in South Africa where he won the 400m Hurdle race at the ASA Grand Prix and settled for third place in the second ASA Grand Prix. He finished third in 49.29 at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

“It was a great experience competing with other elite athletes, and I learned a lot. However, the races were not easy but I’m grateful I ran good times. Experience is what saved me,” he said.

Speaking about his brilliant form this season, Were is less surprised since he worked hard to get to that level.

“I am not surprised because of my good shape this season…it was something I saw coming. I know what I want and this has been a silent journey for me. This is the right time for me to go for what I want,” he said.

After the Kip Keino Classic, Were will be keen to make Team Kenya for the World Championships in Budapest.
