The 21-year-old announced himself on the world stage when he ran 19.46s to claim Olympic gold in the men's 200m events. Tebogo fails first attempt at Bolt’s record
Pulse Sports reported that Tebogo came up short in his first attempt at the 200m record after publicly expressing his desire to take Usain Bolt’s crown.
Tebogo did win his race, despite failing to break the record. He ran 19.83s (+0.6 wind), beating the Dominican Republic's Alex Ogando (19.86s) and America’s Kenny Bednarek (20.00s).
The Batswana’s underwhelming finishing time was impacted by his poor start; however, he did show his superior quality by recovering and winning the race.
Tebogo clears the air
After the race, the youngster explained that he did not state definitively that he would beat Bolt’s record time.
“I didn't say I would break the world record; I said it was 10 metres away from me,” Tebogo said, per FloTrack. “It is going to take a lot of courage for me to do that.
“I needed a bit of rest before we can attempt it again. It's going to take a while; maybe when the body feels good when the weather is perfect in Brussels, that's when we will see when the time is going to be.
“But I can’t put a date for when I'm going to break the record because the moment I put a date, I have already put myself under pressure. I don't want that pressure on me.”
