ATHLETICS IG Japhet Koome lauds Mary Moraa for dominant Budapest exploits

She won the 800m gold medal, making her the third Kenyan woman to win a gold medal at the World Championships.

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome is the latest addition to the list of people who have congratulated Mary Moraa for her remarkable feat at the just concluded World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Competing in the Hungarian capital, Moraa had one task to accomplish and she surely delivered in style. She won the 800m gold medal, making her the third Kenyan woman to win a gold medal at the World Championships.

Moraa outsmarted silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain and defending champion Athing Mu to clinch the highly coveted title in a Personal Best time of 1:56.03. Hodgkinson and Mu settled for second and third place respectively.

On her visit to Koome’s office at the National Police Service Headquarters on Wednesday, the IG commended her for a good job done and encouraged Kisii Express to keep up the good work. The meeting follows Moraa's stunning performance on the global stage.

He said: "Congratulations and well done, you have made the National Police Service proud.”

The IG advised Corporal Moraa and her fellow NPS athletes to uphold discipline and shun malpractices, particularly doping.

On her part, Moraa said: "Excited to present my World Athletics 800m gold medal to my boss, Inspector General of National Police Service, Japhet Koome, EBS, HSC, NDC(K) at the NPS Headquarters, Nairobi, today."

Meanwhile, Moraa was enlisted in the Administration Police Service as a Police Constable in 2021 and currently serves under the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) responsible for emergency response to public disorders.

Of the 10 medals won by Team Kenya in Budapest, five were bagged by National Police Service Officers. They include Moraa, Beatrice Chebet, Beatrice Chepkoech, Abraham Kibiwott and Daniel Simiu.
