Kamworor said the World Cross-country championships were a great preparation ahead of the marathon.
The 2019 New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor has now shifted focus to the London Marathon slated for April 23, 2023.
The event marks his participation in four major marathons as he has initially competed at the New York City, Berlin, Boston, and Tokyo marathons. The only major he is yet to compete in is the Chicago marathon.
“I am now ready for the London Marathon and the future is bright,” Kamworor said.
Kamworor was part of Team Kenya to the just-concluded World Cross-country championships and he said the competition was a huge part of his preparation for the marathon.
Kenya came out victorious with 10 medals including six gold, two silver, and two bronze, however, the men’s senior race saw no Kenyan finish in the podium bracket.
Kenya had lost the title to Uganda at the 2019 World Cross-country championships and Kamworor was hopeful of reclaiming it in 2023 but it proved impossible.
The two-time World Cross-country champion expressed his disappointment towards the loss but attested that there was tough competition despite engaging in vigorous training ahead of the event.
“We went to Bathurst knowing we would win the senior title but the tough competition was our major undoing,” Kamworor said.
The race was won by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo. Kamworor was the first Kenyan to cross the finish line in fourth. Other Kenyans in the race included Kibiwott Kandie, Daniel Simiu, and Sebastian Sawe who finished fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.
Others included Nicholas Kimeli who finished 13th as Emmanuel Kiprop placed 19th.
Meanwhile, Kamworor also noted that he has not yet decided on the race he will compete in at the World Championships in Budapest but said he will be looking to make Team Kenya for the same.
Last year, he participated in the marathon and placed fifth in 2:07:14.
