World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has been tipped to enjoy a long marathon career amidst skepticism due to his lack of a track background.

World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has been backed to enjoy a long marathon career against doubts that his background does not favour him in that respect.

Kiptum is still basking in the glory of his world record set at the Chicago Marathon over a fortnight ago, having clocked 2:00:35.

It was yet another demonstration of his sheer talent as he tore apart his opponents to become the fast athlete to run a marathon under 2:01 in what was just his third race in less than a year.

There have been suggestions that the 23-year-old will fade off after a few years since he does not have a track background like some of his peers but athletics coach Stephen Mwaniki thinks otherwise.

“Kiptum is sheer talent, he has talent, and maybe he is lucky to have a coach who gives him the right skills in marathon,” said Mwaniki.

“He is a phenomenal, we do not know what is in store for him. He can last long until people get surprised. He can prove people wrong and go for 10 years like Eliud [Kipchoge] and he could go longer because he is younger,” he added.

Since his marathon debut in Valencia last December, Kiptum has registered three of the six fastest times over the distance in history.

He clocked 2:01:53 on his marathon debut in Valencia, managed 2:01:25 in London this year before the 2:00:35 in Chicago. So, does running such fast times early in his career pose any danger?

“No risk, everyone wants to run fast times just that development of everybody is different,” Mwaniki explained.

“Others are delayed to reach that level because of other things but others struggle with 2:10 then 2:08, 2:05. He is just lucky and there is no risk.”

Kiptum, who has expressed his desire to compete with Eliud Kipchoge for Olympics gold at next year’s games in Paris, France has also been tipped to become the fast man to run under two hours in an open marathon.
