Newly crowned world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has shared how it felt when he ran faster than Eliud Kipchoge.
At the Chicago Marathon, the 23-year-old destroyed a strong field to clinch top honours in 2:00:35 and obliterate Kipchoge’s world record time of 2:01:09 that he set during the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

ATHLETICS World Athletics unveil World Cross-Country Tour calendar
The 2023-2024 Cross Country Tour calendar is the biggest yet, as it features 25 fixtures from September to March – 15 Gold level, eight Silver and two Bronze.
However, Kiptum still maintains respect for Kipchoge, who has achieved a lot since his switch to the 42km distance.
Kipchoge is a five-time Berlin Marathon champion, four-time London Marathon champion, and two-time Olympic marathon champion among other accolades he brags about.
When asked about how it felt to run faster than the man considered as the greatest of all time in the marathon, Kiptum said: “Of course, Eliud is the greatest of all time and he has done a lot and we respect him. We have to follow what he has done.”
Meanwhile, Kiptum made his switch to the marathon in 2022, debuting at the Valencia Marathon where he clocked the fastest-ever debut time. The father of two clocked 2:01:53 to cross the finish line.
He then proceeded to the London Marathon earlier this year where he stunned the whole world by clocking the second-fastest time in history and winning the race, only in his second marathon. The Kenyan cut the tape in a time of 2:01:25.
His major triumph came at the just-concluded Chicago Marathon where he yet again brought the world to a standstill, obliterating Kipchoge’s world record to carry the day.
