Fallen marathon talent Kelvin Kiptum has yet again been honoured by the government after he was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Wednesday morning and his family and that of his coach, Gervais Hakizimana received Ksh 10 million each.
Kiptum, the current world marathon record holder lost his life in a tragic road accident on February 11. The reigning London Marathon champion was driving on the night of Sunday, February 11 when the car veered off the road into a ditch and then hit a large tree, authorities said.
He and his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana were killed instantly with another passenger, Sharon Kosgei, was injured in the crash.

In his short marathon career, Kiptum had won all the marathons he had competed in since his debut at the 2022 Valencia Marathon where he won in the fastest time ever by a debutant.
He then won the London Marathon in 2023 in the second fastest time before shattering Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. He was due to attempt the sub-two-hour marathon assault at the NN Rotterdam Marathon before his untimely death.

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba presided over the event that was attended by Kiptum’s and Hakizimana’s families and Elgeyo Marakwet CECM Sports Purity Koima.
Namwamba noted that they always celebrated Kiptum in his life and even in his death, the world will continue acknowledging his impact.
Together with Kiptum's son Caleb Kigen, Namwamba led the unveiling ceremony to celebrate one of Kenya's Greatest marathon runner who had a lot of potential but unfortunately the world would never know what he would have done.
“This hall celebrates the best of Kenya’s sports and creatives such as Joe Kadenge, Paul Tergat, and Ngugi wa Thiong’o. This is both a proud and sad moment as we celebrate the induction of a promising athlete who departed this world in his prime.
