Kenyan athletes held a 10km walk in memory and honour of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum who died following a road accident this month.

Kenyan athletes led a 10km walk in memory and honour of departed world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum in Iten, Elegeyo Marakwet county on Monday.

Led by four-time New York Marathon champion, 10K Valencia Ibercaja runners-up Emmaculate Anyango, marathoner Mark Korir, 2021 Amsterdam Marathon champion Angela Tanui among others, the athletes led the 10km walk from the border of Uasin Gishu county up to the Governor's office in Iten, Elegeyo Marakwet county to honour the departed hero.

They were joined by other Kenyans as they carried large banners with the image of Kiptum, braving the scorching sun to honour their departed colleague, who died following a road accident alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana on February 13.

This came a day after over 200 athletes who train in Iten gathered to light candles in his honour on Sunday.

“Kiptum’s death shocked the whole world because he is someone who had embraced athletics and took it to another level. He made the marathon look so easy and everybody was waiting to see how he would perform in April during the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands,” Keitany told Nation.

“We were also waiting to see how he was going to tackle the Olympic Games but he has left us. The whole world is grieving. We shall continue praying for the family at these trying moments so that they can be strong,” added Keitany, the women’s only marathon world record holder.

Kiptum will be laid to rest at his Naiberi farm in Uasin Gishu county, two days after the burial of his friend and coach Hakizimana in Kigali, Rwanda.
