Dominic Ngeno and Kipkemboi secured second and third place in the men's marathon as Ethiopians dominated in both elite fields.

The 2024 TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon witnessed an exceptional display of talent, with Ethiopia taking top honors in both the men’s and women’s races.

Mulugeta Asefa triumphed in the men’s marathon, crossing the finish line with a stellar time of 2:07:16.

This victory marked Asefa's second marathon win of the season, following his earlier success at the Schneider Electric Marathon in Paris in April.

Asefa’s victory was hard-fought, as the men’s race came down to the wire.

With just 3 kilometers left, the race was still anyone’s to win, as Asefa faced fierce competition from Kenya’s Dominic Ngeno and Noah Kipkemboi.

However, Asefa managed to surge ahead in the final stretch, leaving Ngeno and Kipkemboi to secure second and third places, with run-times of 2:07:23 and 2:07:31 respectively.

On the women’s side, it was a clean sweep for Ethiopia, with Waganesh Mekasha delivering a record-breaking performance.

Mekasha crossed the line in 2:20:46, setting a new Canadian soil record for the marathon.

She was followed closely by fellow Ethiopians Roza Dereje, who clocked in at 2:21:26, and Afera Godfay, who finished with a time of 2:21:50.

Remarkably, all three women came in under the previous course record of 2:22:16, set by Kenya’s Magdalyne Masai in 2019.
