Kenya's Denis Kipkoech has shared how he missed a gold medal at the ongoing World U20 Championships due to a miscalculation in the 3,000m final.
Kenya's Denis Kipkoech believes he could have won a gold medal at the ongoing World U20 Championships had he got his tactics right.
Kipkoech won silver in the men's 3,000m in a time of 8:20.79 to hand the country its third medal but it could have been much more.
He led in the final lap but lost steam in the final stretch with Norway’s Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen surging forward to secure victory in 8:20.26.

Kenya's Denis Kipkoech wins silver in 3,000m at World U20 Championships
Denis Kipkoech won silver for Kenya in the 3,000m at the World U20 Championships after being narrowly edged out by Norway's Andreas Halvorsen.
Kipkoech and his Kenyan compatriot Clinton Kimutai Ngetich had planned to attack the race and lock their competitors out of first and second positions and it seemed to be going to plan.
Ngetich made a move to the front with Kipkoech following closely as they positioned themselves for gold and silver but when it mattered most, they lacked the finishing kick, as the Norwegian surged forward to pull an upset.
“I must thank God for winning this silver. It was not a walk in the park but hard work that I put in for the medal,” said Kipkoech.

World U20 Championships: Diana Chepkemoi wins bronze for Kenya in hotly contested steeplechase race
Kenya’s Diana Chepkemoi managed to win a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase which saw Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew break a world record.
“With my colleague, we wanted team work. That did not work well especially in the last lap and because my colleague did not manage, I decided to go my way but it was unfortunate that I miscalculated in the last lap because I didn’t know that my competitors were that close to me,” he said.
Great Britain’s Edward Bird claimed bronze in 8:21.00 as Ngetich faded to the 11th position in 8:25.51.
