Team Kenya jetted back into the country on Tuesday night.
Former World Half Marathon record holder Kibiwott Kandie is banking on Team Kenya to bolster their medal haul at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 19-27.
Kandie was part of the contingent to the just-concluded World Cross-country championships. Kenya displayed great results topping the medal table and winning the team title.
Kenya bagged 10 medals both individual and team titles including six gold, two silver, and two bronze.
The mixed relay team which comprised of Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Mirriam Cherop, Kyumbe Munguti and Brenda Chebet opened up on a high note winning the title.
The women’s junior race saw Pamela Kosgei settling for third place while the men’s race was won by Ishmael Kipkurui as Reynold Kipkorir took second.
The senior women’s witnessed Beatrice Chebet take a dramatic win to retain the title marking the eighth consecutive win in the category. The junior men’s title comes back to Kenya after 12 years on the road.
Kandie was part of the men’s senior race and he could only manage a fifth-place finish. However, he promised they would perform much better at the World Championships.
“Our coaches have come up with very meaningful strategies that have helped us perform well. We are very sure in Budapest we will come with more medals,” Kandie said.
He added that the team performed well and it had been long since such great results were displayed.
Before the championship, Kandie had promised that the team will display great results and he was glad that they lived up to the expectations.
“We did our very best as we had promised. We fought and came back with medals and we want to maintain that hot streak going forward,” he said.
