The Marathon will have three categories of runners
The 24th edition of the Lewa Marathon will be held on 24th June at the expansive Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Isiolo County, the organizers announced on Tuesday.
The marathon, which has seen elite athletes compete in the tough course over the years, will have over 1400 runners participating.
Local mobile telephone company Safaricom has announced that they will sponsor the event after putting in over Sh10 million.
“Our KES 10 million sponsorship will also provide connectivity at the event and optimize the network for a seamless experience for our customers.
We are proud to be part of this noble cause as we continue to be an enabler of sustainable livelihoods through meaningful connections with communities,” Safaricom said.
Safaricom partner Huawei Technologies Kenya has also handed a cheque of Sh13 million.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Chief executive officer Mike Watson disclosed that the event expects to raise over Sh 65 million for conservation, health, and education projects.
Peter Wahome and Fridah Chepkite are the Lewa Marathon defending champions after winning the 2022 edition.
That was the seventh win for Chepkite, who has already confirmed that she will defend her title.
“I am already in shape now and for the remaining three months I will be working on speed. Apart from that I will do long runs for endurance and mileage,” she said.
Lewa Marathon is a charity event jointly organized by the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Tusk Trust.
Since the first event in 2000, the event has raised over $8.8 million, which has gone into various initiatives that impact wildlife conservation, construction and equipping of schools, provision of equipment at health facilities, and engaging in sustainable harvesting and use of water.
The Marathon will have three categories of runners which include; 5km children’s fun race for children aged 10 to 17 years, the 21 km half marathon which will include team races and the 42km full marathon.
