Malaika Mihambo marked her comeback by winning the women's long jump gold medal at the European Athletics Championships, thus stirring an anticipated clash with Tara Davis-Woodhall at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo has thrown down the gauntlet to her rivals that she's ready to successfully defend her long jump title in Paris, after soaring to the farthest jump since 2019 for victory at the European Athletics Championships.

The German legend leaped a distance of 7.22m in her second attempt to seal the win and overtake Tara Davis-Woodhall's world-leading distance of 7.18m.

In addition, Mihambo's mark is the longest winning distance at the European Championships in this century, and it's her second farthest career jump behind her Personal Best (PB) of 7.30m.

She led a fierce final such that silver medallist Larissa Lapichino set a European U23 lead of 6.94m, while Agate De Sousa won the bronze medal in a Season's Best (SB) of 6.91m.

The 4th - 7th place finishers sadly lost on a podium finish despite jumping PBs that would have medalled in any other final.

Mihambo's comeback after sustaining an injury last year that saw her miss the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, is surely a teaser of what to expect as the season progresses and a mouth-watering anticipated clash with Davis-Woodhall at the Paris Olympic Games.
